Jim Horner

Jim Horner enlisted in Selby in August 1914 in The York & Lancaster Regiment, aged 21 years, but later transferred to the 2nd Battalion DLI and was awarded the Military Medal for his bravery in 1918 whilst working as a stretcher bearer. After the Great War, he remained in France, marrying a Belgian widow and working at Angers for the War Graves Commission as a gardener. During the Second World War, he was interned by the Germans in a civilian camp near Belfort, where he remained for two years. In poor health, he was then freed, as part of a prisoner exchange, and returned home to Liverpool via Sweden on a hospital ship. At the end of the war, Jim Horner returned to France. He died in the 1960's.
